Oprah Winfrey called out Kamala Harris at a Michigan campaign event for avoiding a question, and once again, Harris didn’t offer any solutions.
Kamala Harris attended a celebrity-filled campaign event on Thursday night, hosted by Oprah Winfrey. During the event, Oprah had to politely push Harris to focus her answer when she gave a long-winded response to a policy question from the audience.
The two-hour “Unite for America” livestream from Michigan aimed to showcase grassroots supporters of Harris and let voters ask about her policies. However, Harris didn’t present any new plans.
At one point, someone asked Harris what she would do about the southern border.
Harris started by saying, “That’s a great and important question. My background is as a prosecutor, and I served two terms as the attorney general of a border state, so this issue isn’t theoretical for me—I’ve worked on it.” Her three-minute answer ended with her criticizing Republicans for not passing a bipartisan border bill.
Oprah then asked, “Now that the bill didn’t pass, will you reintroduce it?” Harris interrupted, saying, “Absolutely.” She added, “When I’m elected president, I’ll make sure that bill gets to my desk, and I’ll sign it into law,” but she didn’t offer any new ideas on how to address the border crisis.
The “Unite for America” event aimed to reach a large audience by featuring Oprah Winfrey and streaming on several social media platforms.
A variety of celebrities, like Chris Rock and Ben Stiller, who shared they were voting for Kamala Harris, also joined the event.
Harris spoke extensively about abortion, saying it’s wrong to claim that someone doesn’t have the right to decide what happens to their own body, calling it a violation.
She also repeated her promise to offer first-time homebuyers $25,000 for their down payment, increase tax breaks for small business owners, and expand the child tax credit.
Winfrey, who supported Harris and gave a speech at the Democratic National Convention a month earlier, noted that Harris has shown more energy and confidence since President Biden left the race.
“You know, we all have those moments in life where it’s time to step up,” Harris said, reflecting on her feelings after Biden ended his campaign. “I felt a sense of responsibility, to be honest, and with that comes a sense of purpose.”
Harris made a subtle comment about her opponent, former President Donald Trump, pointing out that “the beauty of a democracy is that, as long as we can keep it, each of us has power.”
As a 2024 candidate, the vice president has only done six media interviews, the lowest for any recent presidential nominee. She also took over a month to share her policy ideas but has said, “I’m not Joe Biden,” and emphasized, “we can’t go back” to Trump.
Her campaign manager, Jen O’Malley Dillon, acknowledged the race against Trump is close and urged voters to show up. She said, “While there’s growing excitement for the vice president and [Minnesota] Governor [Tim] Walz, the race is still within the margin of error. It’s tied.”
“It’s tied in Michigan and other key states. So, we need to work hard and find many ways to get to 270 electoral votes. That’s what we’re focused on.”
