PhD Position at The University of Western Australia.
A PhD scholarship position is available as part of an international ARC*-Discovery research project titled “Redesigning Landcare Policy to better coordinate land conservation across Landholders.”
Summary of research
The position would be based at UWA, in Perth, Western Australia, and would last for three years, with a possible six-month extension. The starting date is flexible but would preferably be as soon as possible. This is because the project has already started.

Stipend of AUD $30,000 per annum
AUD $15,000 if a six-month extension is needed

Research Focus
The PhD topic will involve studying how landholders can be encouraged to cooperate more to achieve cross-boundary environmental outcomes that require landholders to spatially coordinate their activities. The candidate is expected to contribute towards this goal by investigating a particular aspect of the problem: how to relate theoretical modelling and experimental results that can inform us of the conditions under which social norms can positively enhance the effects of economic incentives. To test model assumptions, experiments with students and others will need to be programmed and run, either in a lab or online. This work will be done in parallel to other project work carried out in the field in Australis and elsewhere, as part of an international team.
Requirements
- The candidate must have a Master’s degree in, and have strong interest in the field of
- Social cooperation problems, or
- Experimental and behavioral economics, or
- Economics of agriculture and environment, or
- Any mix of these, or other closely related areas
- Have experience in applied econometrics or statistics
The following are not necessary but will be an advantage:
- Have some skill in computer programming (e.g. Python, R, or similar)
- I have done research in the field of
- Agricultural economics, or
- Environmental economics, or
- Social-cultural economics, or
- economics of social networks, or
- Behavioral or experimental economics, or
- Any mix of these, or other related fields.
